    Hello sir I have a heater in my betas tank could I put that in the teeny tiny tank I have for our tadpoles? Can they survive in unheated water? We have a TON of them in our pool so I just rescued a few bc my kids love them and in a few days once the pool chemicals are done again (every Tuesday I think,) the rest will probably die. I have carrot I can boil to feed them but money is tight right now. I don’t have any swamp water bc they were in our pool. I used regular water with stress coat to put them into instead of more toxic pool water . I hope h see this maybe Thankyou

      Tadpoles don't need heated water, room temperature is fine. Feeding them shouldn't be too expensive, leafy greens is the best thing for them, but carrot will work too. Good luck with them, hope you can save as many as possible!

    Gotta say this is one of the saddest things happening right now. Don't even live in the UK but I'm in the Balkans, not doing well either here. Cars, walls, destroy it's ability to scavenge and well roads are the nail in the coffin and no one really gives a crap, most forget that this creature even exists. Haven't seen the hedgehogs this year at all, and I saw a pair last year that I think was living under a shed, and have been here for quite a long time. They were doing well, fat and round. But when it leaves your garden it very well may be hit by a car, or it just can't find its way back. It's a small animal that can't climb, if there are walls or roads that cause death, then the inevitable fate is death. Often wonder how the landscape looked before all this concrete and walls and urbanization. These animals were here before us, maybe they'll be here after us too, just maybe. And it's very sad, these are just a delight to have in one's garden, they have personality and they destroy pests. But well, reality is too disappointing.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife 8 днів тому

      It is really sad seeing how vulnerable they are. I absolutely hate it every time I see a hedgehog roadkill. All our walls and fences and concrete gardens are making their lives so difficult. It really is upsetting.

    Greg, thank you so much for your videos. Very inspirational. I have like 9 tadpoles with rear legs. Recently I have added life Daphne as I heard this kind of food for them. • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife 23 дні тому

      I've used brine shrimp and bloodworm plenty of times and they've always been very popular, with no problems. But if you want alternatives, a bit of boiled white fish is very good. Or simply fish flakes will get the job done.

  • @kx1260
    @kx1260 26 днів тому

    There are invasive red eared sliders that took over a frog pond that was once booming with frogs all over. The turtles have basically eaten all of the frogs and tadpoles and the whole pond is virtually dead but I just found a big string of eggs in the pond and just one frog.. should I collect the eggs and try to reestablish the frog population ?

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife 25 днів тому

      That's a tricky one. On one hand, that sounds like a good idea, on the other, it's possible you'd just be fattening up some tasty turtle food. But if the turtles are going to eat the spawn anyway, there doesn't seem much harm in trying.

    • @kx1260
      @kx1260 25 днів тому

      @@GregsWildlife ah unfortunately I was thinking I'd possibly be just giving them more food too. What do you think about if I were to locate them to different ponds in the area that are occupied with the same species ? Thank you.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife 25 днів тому

      Unfortunately, it's not usually recommend to transfer spawn from one pond to another. There's the risk of transferring diseases and other invasive microorganisms that my be in the water. The best way of helping would ideally be to remove the invasive turtles, but that sounds like a very difficult job. It's one of those no-win situations Unfortunately.

    • @kx1260
      @kx1260 25 днів тому

      @@GregsWildlife well alright there's not much I can really do. I'll just have to let nature run it's course with no interference. I don't know much about orchids, but as far as I know, they should be the same thing, so I'd say you were good to go. As long as the top for your tank has enough ventilation to let the air circulate without having gaps big enough for the frogs to escape from, it should be fine.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      Ah, okay. That's why you don't have frogs in your pond. Yeah, unfortunately you'll never get frogs while you have fish. I would be cautious about putting them in there even when they are bigger as the fish could easily eat them. On the plus side, frogs don't actually live in water, so you could just release them in some shady vegetation near by and they should be okay.

  • @crazyclair100
    @crazyclair100 Місяць тому

    My neighbour gave me tadpoles she ironically does not have a pond. Where as I do. I'm using a fish tank to care for them. But ultimately, I'd like to introduce them to my pond when they are big enough is that OK? As they came from my neighbours rockery? If do they need to go back to the neighbours rockery?

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      I think since you are neighbours there shouldn't be a problem if you put them in your pond. It's close enough that you shouldn't upset the local ecosystem. Did you get any spawn in your pond? It might be issue if you already have a pond full of tadpoles since the pond might not support a load extra. But if not, you should be okay. On the other hand if you didn't get frogs spawning in your pond, there might be a reason for that also. Obviously don't put them in if you have fish.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      I've never tried dubias, but I don't see a reason why they wouldn't be fine. You'll be able to tell if the frogs spit them out or not. I think ingesting a small amount of substrate is to be expected. If it's a soil based substrate I don't think it's much of a problem. But if you have gravel you'd probably be best to make sure the stones are too big for them to accidentally swallow.

  • @cynicallyfree

    After tiring of endless sessions "weeding" ground elder, I looked into the plant and was delighted to discover that it is edible. I use quotation marks because, as anyone who has tried (and failed) to weed ground elder will know, this is a remarkably determined plant that will survive all but the most determined weeder! Thankfully, I consider it to be delicious, versatile and very good for you. Personally, I tend to pick the leaves right up until they start flowering and mostly use them as I would parsley. I will finely chop and add to almost any dish that would benefit from a fresh, parsley-like freshen-up and blast of colour. I also chuck it into soups, stews, stocks and sauces. As a beginner forager, this was a great plant to start out with because it is quickly identifiable. My tip is to concentrate on sight and feel - you will quickly get an eye for the way that they grow in 'threes' and how they adapt as they get larger. But really focus on the feel between your fingers as you grasp the stem, which is unusual as it is distinctly triangular. After picking and washing the plant, I recommend transferring to a white plate bit by bit to ensure no stray plants made it through. You will be amazed how quickly your brain learns to identify an interloper. Before you know it, it will stand-out like a Nike swish in a bowl of Adidas logos. Hope this helps anyone tempted to give this a whirl and happy foraging!

      It's a common comment. Many people find they don't eat at first. I wouldn't worry about it too much to start with. If they're hungry, they'll eat. It may be that they're getting enough food from algae in the water. This will quickly change as they get bigger though, so just keep giving them food, always make sure it's there fir when they need it. They'll find it eventually, I'm sure. Good luck!

      Just make sure you have plenty of plants, try not to have much movement in the water, so avoid waterfalls and fountains. Don't have fish. Try not to have concrete surrounding the pond without shade, as on a hot summer day when the baby frogs leave the pond, they can cook themselves before reaching safety.

    Hello there. Can I ask you few question ? When they loose there tail, we have to start feeding them, right ? How many crickets we have to give them ? Is it 1 cricket per frog a day ? Also can we touch them ? Thank you.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      Hi, Yes, once their tail has gone they will need to start feeding. They will eat many crickets in one day, so I usually tip in quite a few and let the frogs hunt. You probably shouldn't touch them too much as it will stress them, but if you do touch them, make sure your hands are wet. Their skin is very absorbant so if you have anything on your hands like chemicals from washing, they can absorb it and it could make them ill.

      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      @@user-li5tw6uc7l With only 10 tadpoles, they shouldn't get dirty very fast. It depends on the size of the tank and if you have plants in there too. I only used to do a partial water change maybe once a week, sometimes less. I'd usually play it by ear and see how the water looked.

      @user-li5tw6uc7l yeah, hornwort would be good. I've used various plants. I usually just go for some random cold water aquarium plants sold in the fish department of my local pet shop. I think as long as it's suitable for a goldfish tank, it will do the job for tadpoles.

    Why do we need to not keep them as pets?

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      They're wild animals. All we're doing here is giving them a start out in life. But also, they do not make good pets as adults. There have been reports of them jumping into the glass of their tank and breaking bones. They never learn that the glass is a barrier. If you want a pet frog, there are other species that are more suitable. You shouldn't take animals from the wild and keep them, only go for captive-bred species.

      Are you worried about it falling in? I never really had an issue with that, it's pretty sturdy. But I do have a cover that I put on once the tadpoles start getting legs and think about leaving the water, just to stop them climbing out before I can transfer them to the terrarium.

    Ive been thinking of breeding my whites tree frogs this summer! good to know daphnia could potentially work well in these tanks, I will continue researching, but they should help well with algae buildup! are there any other species of microorganisms you would recommend for a self sustaining tadpole tank? I cant seem to find many forums discussing this!

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      Other organisms that I've had in tanks before are things like snails and water louse. These both eat algae and other detritus and are fun to watch in their own right. I remember one year I had what may have been flatworms or maybe leeches, they came in with the pond weed!

      It can take around 16 weeks for their legs to form. However, there are many factors that can affect this. It usually happens much quicker in an indoor tank than in an outside pond, generally the warmer the faster.

    • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      It spreads voraciously and out competes anything else growing. It's fine in a small area, as you say when it flowers it attracts many pollinators. However you'll never be able to grow anything else if this gets a foothold. This video is years old, and I'll tell you now, I have more ground elder now than I did in this video. • @GregsWildlife
      @GregsWildlife Місяць тому

      Cucumber can be put straight in, although I did find it made the water dirty as it gets very soggy, so it wasn't my favourite thing to give them. I don't think I personally tried giving them celery, but since that is a bit harder, you could boil it for just a few seconds, like the spinach, just to soften it a bit.
